Last challenge i couldn't make something of a level i was happy with due to lack of time. This time we're giving it a new try. Better planning, more time, a lot more knowledge and lastly a clearer understanding of the pipeline thanks to my mentorship with Jon.

update 1: I took some time to gather references and think about the scope of the project, i created this concept art of the diorama as the main goal for the challenge.
stretch goals could be: one or more smaller side buildings behind the main one, full environment with mountains in the back, upgrade to the door making it more ornamental, rfx for the runestone (making them glow in a night render?), etc. etc.

i've been thinking about the amount of kit pieces (and in the back of my head also the amount of materials but that's for later) this diorama will need. I've come to the conclusion that 8/9 different pieces should be enough to make the scene and
also potential additional stretch goal buildings or structures.

What? two posts in a day?? I did part yesterday evening and part this morning haha. Wanted to get some extra stuff done before leaving this afternoon to go visit some marl mines in the Netherlands this weekend with my girlfriend. She's resting right now so i get some time to upload yesterdays and this mornings progress.
That being said this will be my last update till Monday. Have a good weekend guys 🙂

it's been a while since i last updated, my moms birthday and the trip took me out of the running for a bit. But here we are again! The end of week one! Time for a first moment of reflection.

Did i hit all the goals that i wanted to hit?

i think i did to a degree i'm happy with, there's some minor things i would've liked to see included or be different in the blockout that i have now, that being said, i do have school and a mentorship to take care of so i shouldn't push myself.

Did i plan my goals/scope correctly looking at the amount of hours worked?

I think the scope is correct, i finished neatly within the 10/15 hours i planned for the project this week. If i can keep this up all the way the i should be fine, the second week of November i got 3/4 days coming up where i need to be dedicated to uni so i should take that in account.

Did i have fun?

This wood material went pretty fast since the past few weeks i've been working a lot in designer for my mentorship.

I'm happy with how the wood came out, i got 3/4 more day s before i go full designer mode so i got lots of time to get and process feedback. Still need to sculpt a few rocks that i can scatter and i've been thinking about adding some simple metal parts to the scene to spice it up a bit more (if i have the time ofcourse).

was out of the running for a while due to midterms, in a few hours i hand in my final one and then this challenge gets my full attention again 🙂 here's a small update on some materials and foliage work i did the last few weeks though.

Here's a short gif of the rfx i made that i was talking about yesterday. i'm probably not using it in the scene, but hey, i'll see.
The left one has some more noise on the runes and the right one is pretty clean. It works with a simple sprite renderer that puts a bunch of spawn burst instantatious particles on a ring/disc Shape Location and then uses a vortex velocity for it's movement. The runes also always point towards the camera.

Time wasted? Not really, a bit of niagara practice doesn't hurt since next semester i'll have a uni course on rfx, also i
can for sure use this for a later project.

My final submission starts here.

I'm going to limit the amount of breakdown i put in the final submission since a lot of it was already explained in the above posts. I'll limit the breakdown here to core elements.

Before posting i want to say i had a great time and learned so many new skills i wouldn't have if not for the challenge.
I also want to thank all those who gave feedback and helped me out! I couldn't wish for better friends / tutors!
Now that the challenge is over i'll be there to play delta force/path of exile with you all instead of annoying you with questions like: does this material look weird? .... yeah, no, you're saying it doesn't but are you sure? Haha.

final fun fact, the runes on top of the stone say Lífþrasir which is the name of my cat, Lífþrasir is a viking god but the diminutive for that in dutch sounds like liefje, which means my lil girlfriend.
